The role of Libyan universities in meeting the requirements of sustainable development

Abstract:
This study aimed to identify the concept of sustainable development and its goals. And to analyze the role of universities in achieving the requirements of sustainable development for the dimensions (economic, social and environmental), and to provide recommendations to improve the role of universities in supporting sustainable development. This study was applied to a simple random sample from within the study population estimated at about 80 faculty members distributed among different colleges of the two universities, including about 33 females and 47 males. The questionnaire forms were distributed to all members of the sample and (76) forms were retrieved, thus the percentage of questionnaires subject to analysis is out of the total questionnaires. Distribution is about 95%. The main question of this study was represented in the following question: What is the role of Libyan universities in achieving the requirements of sustainable development in the dimensions (economic, social and environmental), and the study used the descriptive analytical approach to achieve the goal of the study. It reached a set of results, the most important of which is that there is a major role for the universities under study in promoting sustainable economic development, as all statements came with a strong or very strong degree of importance, with definite moral connotations. The study recommends that universities should continue to develop and expand their economic programs that contribute to creating job opportunities, supporting innovation, and enhancing interaction with the local market. It is also important to strengthen cooperation with local companies and small projects to provide training and employment opportunities for students.
