Abstract:
This study addresses one of the most important issues in political thought: the concept of sovereignty in the philosophy of Jean Bodin, focusing on its origins and development. Bodin, a French political thinker, examined this concept in his seminal work “The Six Books of the Republic.” His approach was marked by realism and objectivity, grounded in his personal experience in law, politics, and the study of history.

Bodin's methodology combined philosophical analysis rooted in the philosophy of history and empirical induction, along with comparative analysis of various political systems in the context of their historical development. Thus, he successfully integrated philosophical inquiry, empirical observation, and comparative study.

This paper explores various topics that reflect Bodin’s political thought, starting with a review of his life, writings, and the political, social, and cultural environment that shaped his ideas. It also discusses Bodin’s position in the history of political thought by highlighting his key concepts and the methodology he used in dealing with the subject of sovereignty.

The study then delves into Bodin’s theory of sovereignty, particularly his pioneering ideas that contributed to the conceptualization of sovereignty as the supreme authority to which all citizens and subjects are subordinate—an authority that is not bound by any laws, as it is the source of those laws. Thus, sovereignty, according to Bodin, is the ultimate legislative power and remains above the laws it enacts.
