Abstract
The erosion of local architectural identity in Greater Tripoli under the pressures of globalization and rapid urban expansion represents a significant challenge to the preservation of architectural cultural heritage. This paper explores a design-based methodology for reviving traditional crafts within a contemporary architectural framework that reinforces local identity. The city of Tripoli in Libya was selected for the study due to its rich architectural history across various eras, with many buildings still bearing witness to this heritage through distinct architectural details and elements. The Al-Ghairan district was chosen as the project site, and the project was named "Bayt al-Fann" (House of Art) for traditional arts and crafts industries. The study adopted a descriptive-analytical approach to analyze the current state of traditional industries and three reference architectural models (local, Arab, and international), in addition to an applied approach in developing the design. Research tools included: site analysis (area: 35,500 m²), studying user needs, and extracting design criteria according to seven main dimensions. The results demonstrated the possibility of employing elements of traditional Libyan architecture—such as courtyards, arches, and mashrabiyas—within a contemporary framework that achieves functional efficiency. This paper concludes that the strategic integration of local elements with modern construction techniques can produce a contemporary local architecture that preserves the city's architectural heritage, is environmentally responsive, and is closely aligned with the project's function. Thus, the "Bayt al-Fann" architectural design serves as an important model for protecting Libya's tangible heritage.
