Abstract
Libyan cities, including Sirte City, have undergone profound urban transformations due to successive periods of armed conflict followed by reconstruction and urban renewal interventions. These processes have significantly influenced the structure of urban networks and patterns of spatial connectivity. In the absence of detailed spatial analyses addressing these transformations, this study aims to investigate the axial structure of Sirte in its current state, considering it as a composite outcome of war impacts and post-conflict reconstruction. The study employs the Space Syntax methodology through Axial Analysis, based on the development of a comprehensive axial map of the city’s street network, analyzed using DepthmapX software. Key spatial measures include Global Integration, Local Integration, Connectivity, and Choice. These indicators are interpreted as reflections of the current spatial condition of the urban network, aiming to identify levels of cohesion or fragmentation shaped by conflict and reconstruction processes. The findings reveal noticeable variations in spatial integration across the network, with potential movement concentrated along a limited number of primary axes, while large portions of the urban fabric exhibit lower levels of connectivity. These patterns can be understood as outcomes of war-related disruptions, including the fragmentation of key urban routes, as well as reconstruction efforts that have not sufficiently addressed the restoration of spatial continuity. The study argues that post-conflict reconstruction should extend beyond physical rebuilding to include the reconfiguration of spatial connectivity, as a fundamental component for achieving urban efficiency and reinforcing social cohesion.
